Can foreign collectors and museums sustain Brazil’s art market? The country is in the doldrums, but its artists have never before enjoyed such critical acclaim abroad by  JANE MORRIS   |   13 September 2016 Rio 2016’s aquatics centre was completely covered by a work of art, a flexible tarpaulin mimicking tiles, by Adriana Varejão (Rio/Andre Motta) Print   Email   Facebook   Twitter Pinterest   LinkedIn   Google+   Reddit Rio’s Olympics gave Brazil a temporary lift last month, but attention is now turning back to the country’s grim reality. In the seven years since winning the Olympic bid, Brazil has gone from commodities-fuelled boom to corruption-ridden burn-out. Predictably, Brazil’s art market has stalled, and some galleries have reported their business down by a third. But the international reception of Brazil’s artists, most recently their prominence in the Tate Modern extension, “is a cause for celebration”, says Márcia Fortes, the director of Galeria For

The show ostensibly seeks to rehistoricize masks as aesthetic objects that are not meant merely for display or concealment, but are also used within a performance context; it attempts to connect contemporary performance practice to objects created in the last century among tribes around the African continent

Installation view, ‘Disguise: Masks and Global African Art’ at the Brooklyn Museum (photo © Johnathan Dorado) (click to enlarge) Masks present a quandary. It’s not so much what they’re hiding that I wonder about, but what the camouflage or costuming is meant to produce in me. The show ostensibly seeks to rehistoricize masks as aesthetic objects that are not meant merely for display or concealment, but are also used within a performance context; it attempts to connect contemporary performance practice to objects created in the last century among tribes around the African continent. The show is so complex and sprawling, we had to see it twice to fully make sense of what was happening. What follows is an edit

Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche on his paintings... said: “The universe is spontaneously present, who could have created it? It is the grand production of its creative energy.” And all appearance is blessed by it..

Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche on his paintings, natural creativity, and the art of living a sane life By  Dzigar Kongtrul FALL 2007 When we walk into a good antique shop we appreciate the craftsmanship of the pieces. We see the time and skill put into the glass, silver, and wood. Antiques have a quality of richness because in the past artisans had more time to put into their craft—things were not mass-produced, and there was a sense of lineage, a way of doing things. The energy put into the creation of art reflects our own richness and communicates this richness to others. Our appreciation of a beautiful piece of art is not limited to the piece itself—we experience the process that the artist went through as well; it is a transference of consciousness. Whether we are an artist or an onlooker, we feel the creative energy. When it has been formalized into a piece, the artist’s energy has not become the piece itself, but the piece is blessed by the creativity of the artist. Unt
